    DeKALB – Excelleaf, DeKalb County’s first ever recreational marijuana dispensary, is ready to take consumers to new levels. The company, 305 W. Locust St., opens its doors to the public for the first time as part of a soft opening Friday. “We’re excited about that,” said Nakia McAdoo, a founding partner for Canndid Spirit Too, LLC. Canndid Spirit Too, LLC is the company that operates Excelleaf, the city’s first marijuana dispensary. The business is majority women-led.

    NORTH CHICAGO – Growing Healthy Veterans, an organization in North Chicago dedicated to healing veterans through horticulture and providing healthy food for the community, received $150,000 to expand operations, thanks to state Sen. Adriane Johnson. “This organization directly supports veterans in the Lake County community combat post-war trauma,” Johnson, D-Buffalo Grove, said in a news release.

    Thanksgiving has been an official holiday in the U.S. since 1863, and the people of Joliet have found ways to celebrate the occasion ever since. Some of those long-ago Thanksgivings reflect the past and future – and somewhat resemble modern celebrations. There was much to be thankful for in Joliet in 1909, and a lot was going on. Movie theaters are busy places today on Thanksgiving, but in 1909, motion pictures were just catching on.
