SPEEDWAY, Ind. (WISH) — For Chris Nodine, Brian Cuneo and Rawn Walley, hours of boredom can turn into seconds of chaos in an instant. Nodine is the fire chief of South Madison Fire Territory in Madison County, northeast of Indianapolis, and a retired Anderson firefighter. Cuneo is a firefighter-paramedic for Greenfield in Hancock County, east of Indianapolis. Walley is a retired firefighter for Sugar Creek Township in Hancock County.

In an interview with News 8 for All INdiana Politics, the Indiana Republican said his SHIPS for America Act already has the backing of the Trump administration and Republicans and Democrats in both houses of Congress. Young co-wrote the bill with Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Archbishop Charles C. Thompson on Thursday said the new pope’s selection of the papal name Leo might offer some hint as to what kind of pope he’ll be. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, the newly elected pontiff now known as Pope Leo XIV, is the first pope from the United States, and the new leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics. Thompson, who leads the Indianapolis Archdiocese, said he did not expect an American to be named pope.

BOONE COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) — Gov. Mike Braun and Eli Lilly officials broke ground Tuesday on one of the first major projects for the LEAP District. Company officials said the Lilly Medicine Foundry will support about 400 jobs when it is completed in 2027. The facility will consist of seven buildings totaling 1.2 million square feet and cost about $4.5 billion.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Leaders with two Indianapolis nonprofits on Monday said cuts to AmeriCorps funding has killed several training programs in progress. The Trump administration in late April froze funding for AmeriCorps. President Donald Trump’s proposed budget would eliminate the program entirely. In Indianapolis, AmeriCorps funded 12 volunteers placed with 10 nonprofits and the city government.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Two members of Indiana’s best political team on Friday said Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith should apologize for his comments on the Three-Fifths Compromise and put the issue to rest. Clergy groups, Senate Democrats, and the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus have for days demanded Beckwith apologize for a post on his official X account in which he called the Three-Fifths Compromise “a great move” that ultimately ensured the demise of slavery. Most historians do not share that view.
