The pride of inner-city Dublin Kellie Harrington is a “hero” and an “inspiration”, according to Portland Row locals. As Harrington was in the depths of defending her Olympic lightweight boxing title against China’s Wenlu Yang at Roland Garros last Tuesday evening, her family, friends, and neighbours watched on from Diamond Park, cheering every punch, willing her over the proverbial gold line. “Everybody was buzzing,” Nicola Fitzgerald, a local resident and longtime friend of Harrington’s said.

Gardaí appeal for witnesses following Dublin 2 assault

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses after a young man was seriously injured during an assault in the Mercer Street area of Dublin 2 yesterday. The man, aged in his 20s, was attacked shortly after 2.20pm and was taken to St James’s Hospital by emergency services where his injuries have been described as serious but non-life-threatening. Gardaí say they have definitive lines of enquiry and investigations are ongoing.
Record number of students begin Leaving Cert and Junior Cycle exams

A record number of Leaving Certificate and Junior Cycle students all around the country began their State exams this morning. More than 136,000 students – the most since the examinations were introduced – sat down to take the first exam at 9:30am. Leaving Certificate students had English paper one at 9:30 while Home Economics will take place at 2pm. Junior Cycle students also had their English paper earlier this morning and will have Religious Studies at 1:30pm.
€2 million renovation works to begin on Talbot Street next week

Renovation works on Talbot Street in Dublin City Centre are set to begin next week, Dublin City Council says. According to the local authority, the €2 million project aims to make the area a more “thriving, attractive and safe cityscape” for locals and tourists. A leaflet given to local councillors says that DCC plans to carry out several “positive interventions” including improving footpaths and public lighting while also introducing additional greenery to a number of “key city centre locations”.
