ST ROCCO’S Hospice in Warrington is celebrating 40 years of caring this month, May. St. Rocco’s Hospice opened its doors to the first patient on 7th May 1985 and was officially opened in September 1985 by Her Grace, the Duchess of Norfolk. The aim was to provide specialist palliative care to the people of Warrington after a vision from a local GP, Dr Michael Thomas, who realised that Warrington and Halton needed a hospice.

WARRINGTON Borough Council will respond quickly to the damning Best Value inspection, with council leader Cllr. Hans Mundry pledging to cooperate with all the Government’s recommendations. These include appointing a new Director of Transformation and Improvement and the appointment of a new opposition member as Chair of the Scrutiny Committee. At the Cabinet meeting yesterday, Monday 12 May, Cllr Mundry provided an update on the council’s response to the recent best value inspection report.

WARBURTON Toll Bridge could be shut during the ongoing upgrade works to protect the safety of other road users and engineers who are being put at risk by the drivers of tractors, lorries and other heavy vehicles. Since the tolls were withdrawn to facilitate the upgrade works last year, various measures have been put in place to deter overweight vehicles with limited success.

THREE fire crews were called out last night to tackle a large grassland fire next to the River Mersey in Warrington. At 21:39 fire engines from Lymm, Warrington and Penketh attended reports of a fire on Mersey Walk near Westy Park. An area of grassland that was on fire on the side of a river was attended by firefighters. They used What3Words to locate the area which was down a footpath at the side of the river and involved approximately 100 square metres of grass.
