A Sinn Féin councillor and chairperson of a Dungiven-based support group has spoken out to defend his decision to apply for funding from renewable energy producer, ERG. The company, which produces wind and solar energy and has operations throughout the world, recently awarded £25,000 to St. Canice’s Support Group in Dungiven, through its Community Benefit Fund, helping those affected by addiction.

This weekend will see a number of commemorative events taking place across the county to mark the 109th anniversary of the 1916 Rising. Organised by the County Derry and Antrim Republican Graves Association, Sinn Féin Councillor Ian Milne said the events will be a chance to ‘pay tribute to our patriot dead’. Councillor Milne said: “The main commemorative parade will take place in The Loup at 2.30pm on Easter Sunday.

County Derry fashion designer Jonathan Anderson has been appointed as the Artistic Director of Dior Menswear. Last month the Magherafelt man announced his departure from Spanish luxury fashion house Loewe after 11 years. Anderson’s new role was announced today (Thursday) at LVMH’s annual investors meeting by Bernard Arnault, the chairman and CEO of the conglomerate.

A County Derry business has been completely destroyed by a fire earlier this morning. Fire crews from Dungiven and Crescent Link battled the blaze which broke out at Claudy Cycles on the Baranailt Road just before 7am. A spokesperson for Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service said they believe the cause of the fire was accidental. A spokesperson said: “Firefighters were called to reports of fire at a commercial premises at Baranailt Road, Claudy, Derry/Londonderry.
