Firefighters continue to battle a bushfire in the Strathbogie Ranges in Victoria's north east. A watch and act message remains in place for the communities of Baddaginnie, Boho, Boho South, Marraweeney and Warrenbayne. An advice message has also been issued for Balmattum, Benalla, Creek Junction, Lima, Lima East, Swanpool and Violet Town. Authorities said the fire has burnt through 550 hectares of bushland, with smoke visible from the Hume Freeway and Euroa.

When miners discovered gold in north-east Victoria in December of 1859, they must have thought all their Christmases had come at once. Their rich find led to the creation of the mining settlement called Christmastown between Chiltern and Rutherglen. The gold diggers were optimistic the discovery would lead to the development of a goldfield like that of Ballarat, although that did not pan out. Bill Steele's grandmother Agnes Cregan and her son, Leo, lived at Christmastown.

Woolworths supermarket staff are copping abuse from shoppers amid a supply shortage caused by industrial action at distribution centres, a union says. The Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees' Association (SDA) said its members had reported a concerning increase in ill treatment from customers. "Abusing staff who are doing their best to serve customers is never justified," NSW secretary Bernie Smith said.

In the early hours of October 24, 1934, a DC-2 KLM Royal Dutch Airlines aeroplane encountered a dangerous storm. Margaret Atchison remembers standing with her mother and three brothers on the balcony of their Albury home in southern NSW as the drama unfolded. "We could hear the plane circulating looking for somewhere to land," she said. The plane, known as the Uiver, had been competing in the MacRobertson Centenary Air Race from London to Melbourne.
