Palo Alto police are investigating a brazen burglary attempt in which several individuals smashed through a sliding door of an occupied home on Carmel Drive before getting spooked by the resident and running away. The burglary attempt occurred at about 9 p.m. on Friday on the 2300 block of Carmel Drive, near Oregon Expressway. The residents, a man and a woman in their 20s, were awake and at home when they heard people talking in the hallway, according to a Police Department news release.

A fire gutted an Eichler home in the Midtown neighborhood on Saturday morning. While no people were harmed, up to a dozen animals are believed to have been killed, according to Fire Department officials. The Fire Department was alerted to the fire at about 9:18 a.m. and by the time firefighters arrived several minutes later, the Eichler-style home on the 3300 block of Stockton Place was fully engulfed by flames, said Battalion Chief William Dale.
