This year’s visa data suggests a drop in student applications after years of record recruitment. Applications from January to July 2024 were 16% lower than the same period in 2023.

The City of Cleveland is looking at relocating a “lonely” clinic to a shared location and turning the former site at 3232 Lorain into affordable housing. Built in 1971, the 19,000 square-foot Thomas McCafferty building sits on 1.5 acres. Turning the largely unused clinic into affordable housing – housing is a key root cause for health outcomes – and moving Cleveland Public Health (CDPH) direct services in testing and prevention could benefit more communities, officials said.

Faith-based organizations combine research with real-world applications during community discussion aimed at fixing an inconsistent criminal justice system. Under the current criminal justice system, the standard practice is for those charged with crimes to be detained in jail facilities while they await trial. A gathering hosted by Greater Cleveland Congregations (GCC) on May 7 challenged that status quo.

A community-led renovation of Lake Pool Park is underway, with the goal of modernizing equipment and improving safety for residents. Construction has begun at Lake Pool Park, where the City of Cleveland is investing $654,000 for playground equipment, a splashpad, a shelter, 27 new trees and various other updates and improvements. The project is on schedule to be completed this summer.

One of the biggest objections landlords have to Cleveland’s lead safe ordinance is that it is too expensive, according to Rob Fischer. Fischer, an associate professor at the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences at Case Western Reserve University, is involved in both auditing the city of Cleveland’s progress on lead safety and publishing research about it.

Editor’s note: Kevin Chill Heard served as an adjunct instructor for the NYSP program at CWRU in 2022 and 2023, teaching Hip-Hop History. On the campus of Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), Dennis Harris, camp director of the school’s National Youth Sports Program, labors for an entire year to put together a five-week summer program aimed at giving kids a summer camp experience on a college campus. Many of Cleveland’s youth come from poor families and may not consider college an option.

On Wednesday evening, The Land gathered at Gatewood Home/Share in Collinwood with community journalism program graduates, staff, and friends to celebrate and connect with one other. Since 2021, more than 50 residents have graduated from the program, and The Land recently announced that its sixth cohort of community journalist trainees will begin classes on Monday, Oct. 2. Community journalism program mentor Faith Boone interviewed three of our participants about their experiences.
