One hundred years ago, a pioneering librarian opened a new flagship for the pioneering Cleveland Public Library. Linda Anne Eastman, the nation’s first woman in charge of a big-city library system, led the creation of the $4.6 million Cleveland Main Library at 325 Superior Ave. Throughout the ensuing century, Main Library has offered world-leading collections, expansive services, an innovative layout, and the oldest open stacks at a major metropolitan library.

Cleveland lawyers say that President Trump isn’t just attacking their profession but its clients. Who could be anyone. “We chuckle when we quote the Shakespeare line, ‘Let’s kill all the lawyers,’ until we need a lawyer,” said immigration lawyer Richard Herman. “Then ‘Wow, somebody’s fighting for me!’”Among 116 executive orders through April 8, Trump imposed restrictions on five big law firms, none with Cleveland offices.

On a recent Friday, 127 people took oaths on the first floor of the Stokes Federal Court House to become citizens of what’s known as the land of the free. They got certificates, small American flags and congratulations from officials, families and friends. Meanwhile, on the 13th floor, initial proceedings took place for a few of the millions of deportations promised by President Trump.

Jessica Bloom spent a couple of decades working at restaurants. Mahmoud Salti spent years tending stores. Now, in their 40s, the two are doing pushups, cracking law books and learning to subdue suspects in Cleveland’s police academy. “It’s a challenge,” Salti, 49, says about the academy, which he and Bloom entered in December and hope to graduate in August, becoming Cleveland cops. “For the young ones, it’s a lot easier. But I’m still here.

Many young adults go home to their families for the holidays. That is, if they’ve got families. But many former foster children lack stable families. Many were taken from their natural families because of problems there. Many found new problems in one foster family after another. Now many are out of touch with both sets. Still, a small Cleveland nonprofit called Bessie’s Angels helps young women who’ve graduated from foster care to celebrate during the holidays and to thrive year-round.
