YOU can sometimes let your expectations get ahead of you when you go somewhere you’ve always wanted to visit — but it was the exact opposite when I travelled to marvellous Marrakech. The Moroccan city had been on my bucket list for years, but it proved even more magical than I hoped and was definitely well worth the wait. Heading from the airport through the bustling mayhem of cars, mopeds and even camels, I just knew I was going to love the place.

Ever since I was a boy, I’ve been fascinated with movies. I loved the characters and the excitement—but most of all the stories. I wanted to be an actor. And I believed that I’d get to do the things that Indiana Jones did and go on exciting adventures. I even dreamed up ideas for movies that my friends and I could make and star in. But they never went any further. I did, however, end up working in user experience (UX).

AS we drove up to the Magnolia Hotel in Portugal’s ultra-exclusive Quinta do Lago area, it felt like we’d stumbled onto the set of Happy Days. It’s got a 1950’s motel theme, with a bright exterior and welcoming flashing lights and the rooms reflected that throwback to yesteryear — but in a good way. My mate Mark and I had chosen this Algarve getaway for a bit of winter sun and we weren’t disappointed.
