OCEAN COUNTY — Area emergency response groups are helping to combat the Jones Road fire that started on Tuesday in a southern Ocean County forest and could possibly be the largest wildfire in New Jersey in 20 years. Local fire departments from around the state, including many from Monmouth County, joined state firefighters working around the clock to try to contain the blaze, which originated in the Greenwood Forest Wildlife Management Area near Jones Road in Barnegat Township.

BELMAR — A second-alarm structure fire engulfed multiple houses on 13th Avenue in Belmar during the early hours of Sunday morning, destroying two homes and causing extensive damage to other nearby properties. Two firefighters and one resident were reported with minor injuries. Belmar Fire Chief Sean Pringle told The Coast Star that the Belmar Fire Department was dispatched to 306 13th Avenue at 6:05 a.m. Sunday morning for a reported porch fire that possibly extended into the house.

BELMAR — The Belmar Woman’s Club (BWC) held a spring juried craft fair this past weekend, raising funds for the organization while also offering patrons the opportunity to peruse handmade crafts from local vendors. Eager participants hurried out of the rainy weather to get inside Taylor Pavilion on the Belmar boardwalk as early as 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning to take advantage of the sales and one-of-a-kind gifts from more than 30 vendors at the BWC’s event.

SPRING LAKE — Rainy weather couldn’t deter the return of the annual fishing tournament for kids this past weekend, as families near and far converged in Divine Park for a full day of free fishing and fun for all. Young fishing enthusiasts ages 15 and younger braved the on-again, off-again rain with friends and family on Saturday to take part in the annual contest presented by the Shark River Surf Anglers (SRSA) Club and the American Legion. There was no charge to participate.
