The 21st-century blue box program is coming to Orillia on Jan. 1. "What's happening here is known as the blue box transition that's been occurring since 2023," said Greg Preston, the city's director of waste management and environmental compliance. The existing blue boxes, which have been used since the 1980s, will be replaced by 360-litre roll-out, lidded carts for all residents. There will be separate containers for paper products and containers as is the case currently.

The Canada Day Committee asked council to look into installing a flag pole and a Canada flag at the waterfront venue. Mayor Don McIsaac brought forward an inquiry motion earlier this spring, prompting council to ask for a staff report on the matter. That report came back to council for Monday's meeting.
