Across the Grand Canyon State, tens of thousands of people braved the sweltering summer heat to gather in parks, on street corners and at the state Capitol for a national day of protest aimed at countering President Donald Trump, who was celebrating his birthday with a military parade in Washington D.C.. There were some 40 volunteer-organized “No Kings” rallies in Arizona on Saturday, including one at the state Capitol near downtown Phoenix that was attended by an estimated 5,000 people.

A shooting outside the campaign headquarters of longtime gun safety advocate and congressional candidate Daniel Hernandez left his family and staffers shaken Thursday afternoon. At around 5:15 p.m., according to a statement from the Tucson Police Department, officers responded to a call about vandalism and possible vehicle damage at the Hernandez family home, which doubles as his campaign headquarters. A staffer’s car was struck by a bullet, and shell casings were found at the scene.

Tensions erupted between immigrant rights advocates and Peoria police officers on Tuesday, amid a surge in Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity across the Valley. Federal officials with Homeland Security Investigations, a division within ICE, descended on a Peoria neighborhood Tuesday morning. As many as six residents of a home on 69th Avenue and West North Lane were arrested, according to a neighbor who witnessed the use of flash bangs and a battering ram.
