City officials agreed Thursday that it's time to fix Terrill Street. "Pave it," Alderman Henry Heck said the minute it came up at this week's Public Works Committee meeting. With that endorsement in hand, City Engineer Ted Gillen and Public Works Commissioner Robert Protivansky still made their case for getting to the street sooner rather than later. "It's no secret Terrill Street's in bad shape," Gillen said. "It's got a concrete deck below the asphalt.

In case any of you missed the last couple times I wrote about it, the city is in the middle of a state-mandated effort to identify every connection to the water system that uses lead pipes.

A judge ruled this week that assaulting someone after handcuffing them doesn’t necessarily mean the handcuffing supports a kidnapping charge. In a decision issued Tuesday in Rutland County criminal court, Judge Cortland Corsones found that the weight of the evidence against Jason Seiple was sufficient to hold him without bail on three sexual assault–no consent charges but not on a separate kidnapping charge.

BRANDON – Police say restaurant staff fought off the man who stabbed a Brandon chef. Jozef Eller, 32, of Granville, pleaded not guilty Monday in Windham County criminal court to attempted second-degree murder and a misdemeanor charge of unlawful trespassing. The murder charge carries a potential life sentence and a presumptive minimum of 20 years in prison. Eller was ordered held without bail.

The public needs to know how business is being conducted on its behalf. When particular processes are not being followed or are breaking down, the public needs to know that as well. Keeping quiet about such breakdowns may be to the benefit of individuals, but it does not serve the public. This week, the Herald submitted a public records request to the city that we hope will be fulfilled promptly and then shed light on certain recent decisions. Yes, I'm being coy here and it's probably annoying.
Harper Rose Briar Foundation looks to spread awareness

Brenda Colburn says too many people still think it's OK to give babies Benadryl to get them to sleep. Colburn is a board member of the newly formed Harper Rose Briar Foundation, which was formed by the family of the eponymous infant killed in 2019 by an overdose of diphenydramine, the active ingredient in Benadryl. Stacey Lynn Vaillancourt, who operated the day care at which investigators said the child received the fatal dose, was convicted of manslaughter.
