There was more tension in the Paramount Theatre during the discussion of the war in Gaza than any other portion of U.S. Sen. Peter Welch's community meeting Wednesday. The audience resisted the moderator's first attempt to change the subject — and Welch decided to respond rather than let his aide move the discussion elsewhere — and it produced more shouting and more muttering that I could hear than the other subjects that night.

A while back, Stafford Technical Center Director Melissa Connor made an offhand remark that they should have a Stafford-built podium. "Yesterday, this came rolling into our office," she said, indicating the wooden podium from which she welcomed students, parents, and guests to the Stafford Technical Center awards ceremony in Rutland High School gymnasium Friday.
Killington elects Hickory, Vines

KILLINGTON — Jay Hickory and Bill Vines have joined the select board. The two were the winners of the special election held Wednesday to fill the two new seats created when the town voted in March to expand the board from three seats to five. Hickory, a retired carpenter and construction supervisor who has also worked at the town transfer station, beat real estate service company owner Jay Wysocki, 190-124, to claim the one-year seat.

Negotiations came to a formal end Tuesday as the Rutland City School Board unanimously voted to approve the new teachers’ contract. “We’re good and ratified,” Board Chair Cathy Solsaa said on Wednesday. “We’re all very excited that we reached an agreement and averted a strike.”That strike was averted by mere hours earlier this month when the school board and the union emerged from a last-minute negotiations session with a deal that will increase average salaries by more than 17% over three years.

Grant to help imagine Walmart replacement

The city is about to come up with an alternate use for Walmart. The Vermont National Resources Council announced Tuesday it had awarded $2,500 to Chamber and Economic Development of the Rutland Region to develop a proposal for the the property if and when Walmart vacates for its planned new location at the former Diamond Run Mall. "This is part of the mayor's downtown plaza task force," said Lyle Jepson, CEDRR's executive director.
Police investigate Brandon death

Vermont State Police said they are investigating a suspicious death in Brandon. Police said Brian Bailey, 46, was found unresponsive shortly after 7 a.m. Saturday at his home on Champearl Road. Police said first responders pronounced him dead on the scene and that the death was deemed suspicious due to evidence at the scene and the results of an autopsy conducted at the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington.
'Say their names': War dead honored

To people living today, war dead from a century ago are little more than names on memorials. But those fallen in the distant past, said Sen. Terry Williams, R-Rutland County, meant just as much to the people they left behind as those who never came home from more recent wars. Williams, a U.S. Army veteran, delivered the keynote speech Monday at Rutland High School for the city’s annual Memorial Day service.

Posts that circulated on social media last week expressed worries that the program’s local representative was likely to fall victim to federal budget cuts. Officials with the program said this week something was happening regarding their budget, but that’s what remained unclear.
