There was more tension in the Paramount Theatre during the discussion of the war in Gaza than any other portion of U.S. Sen. Peter Welch's community meeting Wednesday. The audience resisted the moderator's first attempt to change the subject — and Welch decided to respond rather than let his aide move the discussion elsewhere — and it produced more shouting and more muttering that I could hear than the other subjects that night.

A while back, Stafford Technical Center Director Melissa Connor made an offhand remark that they should have a Stafford-built podium. "Yesterday, this came rolling into our office," she said, indicating the wooden podium from which she welcomed students, parents, and guests to the Stafford Technical Center awards ceremony in Rutland High School gymnasium Friday.

KILLINGTON — Jay Hickory and Bill Vines have joined the select board. The two were the winners of the special election held Wednesday to fill the two new seats created when the town voted in March to expand the board from three seats to five. Hickory, a retired carpenter and construction supervisor who has also worked at the town transfer station, beat real estate service company owner Jay Wysocki, 190-124, to claim the one-year seat.

U.S. Sen. Peter Welch, D-Vt., says he will fight the "Big Beautiful Bill" however he can. "This bill should be defeated, not amended," Welch told a crowd at the Paramount Theatre in Rutland on Wednesday evening.

Negotiations came to a formal end Tuesday as the Rutland City School Board unanimously voted to approve the new teachers’ contract. “We’re good and ratified,” Board Chair Cathy Solsaa said on Wednesday. “We’re all very excited that we reached an agreement and averted a strike.”That strike was averted by mere hours earlier this month when the school board and the union emerged from a last-minute negotiations session with a deal that will increase average salaries by more than 17% over three years.
