A coking coal mine on "prime agricultural land" is unlikely to go ahead after the Queensland government found it was "not in the public interest". Queensland's Attorney-General Deb Frecklington announced the decision in Bundaberg on Tuesday morning. "The next stage in this matter is that the department will hand me a full brief when a final decision can be made," Ms Frecklington said.

Heavy rain that could lead to flash flooding is expected in North Queensland today. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 100-180mm are possible and severe storm warnings are in place from Tully to Proserpine. The rain is forecast to ease from early Wednesday morning. Parts of northern Queensland are bracing for more heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding.

Storms are expected to continue across parts of Queensland this weekend, while a heatwave in the state's north-west could deliver temperatures in the mid-to-high 40s. About 1,600 properties were left without power in the South Burnett, north-west of Brisbane, after damaging weather overnight, with electricity not expected to be restored until Friday afternoon. South Burnett Mayor Kathy Duff said big storms, on top of the wet season's usual rainfall, were becoming "very, very problematic".

Queensland's failed Paradise Dam will cost at least $4.4 billion to rebuild, the state government has revealed for the first time. Water Minister Anne Leahy said dam operator Sunwater had provided the estimate, despite the full design for the rebuild not being complete. Sunwater chief executive Glen Stockton said further cost increases could not be ruled out. "As we work through the design we will refine our way through that [cost] and provide advice to the state," Mr Stockton said.
