The Northern Territory's police union says the in-house investigation of a 2019 fatal police shooting shows the NT Police Force (NTPF) can investigate Kumanjayi White's recent death in custody with "impartiality". The union joins repeated rejections by the NTPF and Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro of calls for the investigation into Mr White's death to be outsourced to an "independent" agency.

The Northern Territory is set to become the second Australian jurisdiction allowing residents to carry pepper spray, in a government trial aimed at improving personal safety. The NT government has announced it would "consider" a 12-month trial to allow "approved members of the public" to carry and use a low-percentage Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) spray "for self-defence under strict legal conditions".

A homemade boat decorated with hanging empty beer cans has taken a dozen "pirates" to victory at this year's Darwin Beer Can Regatta. Thousands gathered at Mindil Beach on Sunday to watch homemade boats, fashioned out of empty drink containers including beer cans and plastic milk bottles, sink or swim at the annual charity fundraiser. Six teams raced their beer can boats from the water's edge, around buoys and back to shore, while spectators cheered from the sand.
