May 26—At about 2:30 p.m. on Monday, a man's voice rang out through Evergreen Cemetery. "Where have all the soldiers gone? Long time ago. Where have all the soldiers gone? Gone to graveyards, every one," he sang, accompanying himself on acoustic guitar as he crooned Peter Paul and Mary's "Where Have all the Flowers Gone."A group of children dressed in white traipsed through the cemetery with flowers in their arms, which they laid on the graves of fallen soldiers.

May 22—Portland City Councilors have advanced a ballot proposal to increase the city's minimum wage from $15 to $20 an hour over the next four years to keep up with rising costs of living. The idea, which was originally brought up last year, is again concerning some business leaders who say this will put too much strain on their budgets. The proposal was voted out of the council's Housing and Economic Development Committee on Tuesday night.

Monroe died on May 13, according to his obituary. He was 71.

May 14—Tucked behind the Wex headquarters, beyond a stretch of gravel parking lot in downtown Portland, are two adjoining empty buildings. On a sunny Wednesday, Josh Schlesinger, who has leased the spaces, pulls open a garage door, letting the light pour in. "It's pretty crazy what this place is going to become," he said. And if all goes according to plan, that will be a new music venue, Live at Madrids, with room for about 800 people.
