    Jaywick residents were upset to see the mural had black paint thrown over it after the community came together to create it as part of the Jaywick Sands Art Trail project. The mural, on the side of the Jaywick Beach Bar, was launched by Brazilian artist Ieda Lima-Boswell, owner of the Little Curiosity Spot, and features the beaches and beach huts of the town in bright colours. But the commemorative piece was covered in black paint in recent weeks.

    After attending the VE Day service in Westminster Abbey he made his way to Clacton to host a fundraising lunch for Jim O'Dwyer, 100. Mr O'Dwyer flew 31 missions as a rear gunner on a Lancaster bomber in the Second World War. The milestone event marked the 80th anniversary of VE Day, signalling eight decades since the end of the Second World War in Europe. It meant the end of six years of a war which had cost the lives of millions, destroyed homes, families and cities and brought huge suffering.

    Toby Freeman, founder of The Robin Cancer Trust, met the King and Queen while attending an event recognising the work of community-based cancer care projects. King Charles III was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer in February 2024. Toby, whose award-winning charity is dedicated to raising awareness of testicular, ovarian, and germ cell cancers, was invited by The Royal Family to attend the reception.

    2 1/1 LAST year the UK lost 37 shops a day, with 13,500, closing for good in 2024, according to the Centre for Retail Research. Unfortunately Collectors Cave, in Eld Lane, Colchester, will be joining these statistics by the end of the month. Along with many other resident nerds and geeks of the city, I am upset to hear the news of its closure.

Colchester Zoo features an entertaining challenge which tasks some of the attraction's more muscular visitors to test their strength against five different animals. The challenge tests visitors' strengths against a meerkat, capuchin, chimpanzee, tiger, and an elephant.
