Central Texas was forecasting 100-degree temperatures long before summer began this year, but now it's time for summer temperatures to hit the rest of the country. The "heat dome" regularly talked about in the south and western U.S. has shifted east this week, bringing temperatures well above average for the Midwest and East Coast. As of 1:30 p.m. Monday, Washington, D.C., and New York City were already hotter than Austin. This weather pattern is expected to stay put for the next few days.

AUSTIN, Texas — A dome of high pressure will reside over the Central-South and Southwest this week, bringing the threat of high heat back to portions of the country, including Texas. West Texas will feel more of a dry heat, while Central Texas will keep dewpoints in the 60s and 70s, meaning "feels like" temperatures in the triple digits most afternoons. High pressure mostly favors regions from West Texas to Arizona because it sits further west on the map.

AUSTIN, Texas — For the first time since 2021, Central Texas is under a level 3 out of 4 "moderate" risk for excessive rainfall on Wednesday. This is due to a stationary front that has been parked over the region for multiple days. Flooding can be extremely dangerous in Central Texas. Experts refer to this area as "Flash Flood Alley," as Austin sits at the base of the steep Texas Hill Country, where when rain falls fast, it can easily lead to flash flooding.

AUSTIN, Texas — As we exit a hot and humid weekend here in Central Texas, we look to what could be quite a wet week of weather ahead. A stalled front is expected to linger across the region as the midweek approaches, giving way to multiple days of showers and storm chances. The first chance for storms is expected early Monday morning, as a level 1 out of 5, "marginal" risk for severe weather covers the area's far northern counties; Mason, Llano, Burnet, Williamson and Milam counties.

AUSTIN, Texas — Hurricane season just started two days ago, and meteorologists are already tracking the first major plume of Saharan dust. A bit of dust reached Central Texas early this week, but a more noticeable cloud of it will move in from the Gulf by the end of the workweek. Saharan dust plumes begin to move across the Atlantic around June.
