When Mike Sewards first started working at 12 years old for his father John at Sewards Steak Shop in Allentown, he managed the soda bottles, keeping them in the basement before the soda man picked them up for reuse. “We’d have a whole basement full of soda bottles,” he said. “I think it was a nickel on a big bottle. I can’t remember the price … a nickel on a big bottle, maybe a couple of cents in a small bottle.”Sewards became the new owner after he purchased the shop from his father in 1980.

Customers have the chance to score free Italian ice for a year at the grand opening celebration for a Rita’s Italian Ice & Frozen Custard location near CoopersburgThe celebration will occur 4-6 p.m. Saturday at 7001 N. Route 309 in Upper Saucon Township, the Southern Lehigh Chamber of Commerce announced. The free Italian ice will go to the first 50 customers. “Whether you’re a mango lover or a cherry classic, this is your chance to be part of something cool,” the chamber said on Facebook.

Rite Aid is looking to sell more than 1,200 locations, including several in the Lehigh Valley, as part of its latest Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings. The drugstore chain previously said most of its stores would remain open for a few months as part of the proceedings, and that it would work to transfer prescriptions to other pharmacies. It’ll eventually sell or close all locations.

An Allentown shoe store has announced its upcoming closure and rebranding, just two years after finding a permanent home. Properly Laced will close its location at the Live/Work Unit at The Hive Residences at 107 N. Seventh St., it announced on Instagram Tuesday. The women’s apparel retailer Rainbow will close later this month at the Palmer Park Mall in Palmer Township. The store will close around May 15, Assistant Manager DeOnna Parker said, adding that the Rainbow chain decided this, due insufficient sales at the store. There was no word on what would replace the mall’s Rainbow location, Parker said, and mall management couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
