In the beginning, there was El Pollon. As far as anyone we spoke to can remember, it was the first explicitly Peruvian restaurant in Oklahoma City, opening in 2007. To be accurate, though, the history of Peruvian food in the metro begins in Mexican restaurants, like Nino’s and Ricky’s Cafe. In some ways, the history of Tayta, the new Latin American concept at 25 N. Hudson Ave. downtown, begins at Nino’s. “I met Niel at Nino’s,” Madeline Zambrano says.

The Halles is 5.1 acres of land with 28,000 square feet of rental space, including a handful of 3D-printed cement casitas for vendors to stay in during the show. The grounds boast a restaurant, coffee shop, workout facility and gallery for visiting artists. The fall show in 2024 had neo-expressionist bunny and butterfly artist Hunt Slonem in the space.

For about five minutes, The Den at NONESUCH was the best new thing in Oklahoma City, and then it was gone, part of new owner Kelly Whitaker’s plan for a new chapter for the storied Midtown concept. I wanted to acknowledge that they would have been part of the list had they kept the nested approach going, but I have every confidence that Id Est will do something awesome for what they’re calling Chapter Two.

Akai Sushi, the new Wheeler District restaurant from Viet Pham, featuring executive chef Shinichi Okamoto, opened in September, but the grand opening is October 10. A newcomer to hospitality, Pham spent more than 20 years operating a tennis academy in Minneapolis before coming to Oklahoma City. “My first time in OKC was about 25 years ago, coaching tennis,” Pham said. “After a match, I met Ban Nguyen (Jimmy’s Egg) and he invited me to eat with him.
