Duke Energy customers railed against the utility's proposed 18 percent rate increase during a public hearing at Durham City Hall on Wednesday evening. The hearing was part of a series held by the North Carolina Utilities Commission in an effort to gauge public opinion on the request, which would be the company's largest rate increase for residential customers in at least 20 years. "They have no idea what regular people deal with every day," customer Judy Schlegel said.

The Marine Corps' top general said Wednesday the deadly Beirut barracks bombing 30 years ago helped define the start of America's war against terrorists. Marine Corps Commandant Gen. James Amos, survivors and friends gathered at a memorial bordering Camp Lejeune that honors the victims of the bombing Oct. 23, 1983. Before Sept. 11, it was the deadliest terrorist attack on Americans. Many of the 241 Americans killed were members of Camp Lejeune's 24th Marine Amphibious Unit.

About 7,500 people registered for the annual Krispy Kreme Challenge in Raleigh Saturday, and 5,515 managed to complete it, race spokesman Brian Van Norman said. The rules are simple and stomach-churning: Run for two miles, eat a dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts, and then run back along the same two miles. That's four miles of running to burn off about 2,400 calories. The winner was Jeffery Glick, of Fort Bragg, with a time of 29 minutes and 31 seconds.

North Carolina lawmakers, school leaders and parents are considering whether teachers can be better rewarded for performance through a statewide incentives package. The Educator Effectiveness and Compensation Task Force met with state lawmakers for the first time Tuesday and hopes to make some recommendations regarding teacher pay by mid-April. Finding a better way to link teacher and administrator performance to salaries has been a hot topic since Republicans took over the legislature in 2011.

Greenleaf Christian Church drew a larger crowd than usual Sunday when national labor leaders made a pit stop there, part of a push to register voters in advance of the November elections. The presidents of unions representing teachers and health care workers stopped in Goldsboro to meet with Rev. William J. Barber, president of the North Carolina State Conference of the NAACP, and to preach a message of voter registration and turnout on the eve of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte.
