Carolina Trace FD now part of FirstHealth first responder program

CAROLINA TRACE — FirstHealth of the Carolinas recently recognized the Carolina Trace Fire Department for its completion of training as part of the system’s medical first responder program. Carolina Trace firefighters underwent several weeks of training to align their efforts with protocols that guide medical care in the FirstHealth EMS System. FirstHealth has provided EMS services in Lee County for the last three years and also provides EMS services in Chatham, Montgomery and Richmond counties.

Connecticut fair worker killed in Lumberton; 19-year-old charged

A 19-year-old Lumberton man was charged late Tuesday in the fatal shooting death of a Connecticut man who was working at the Robeson County fair. Terrence Devon Paige is charged with first-degree murder and attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon. According to police, Paige shot and killed 53-year-old Edward M. Reiner, of New Milford, Conn., Monday night after a fight behind a convenience store across the street from the fair.

Snowflakes flew across parts of the northern Triangle early Tuesday, but totals weren't enough to create any major problems on the roadways. A band of precipitation crossed the central part of the state just before dawn, and with air temperatures in the mid-20s, some of those raindrops froze, dusting sidewalks and grassy areas with snow during the early-morning hours. A 19-year-old from Charlotte was killed and another person was injured early Sunday in a shooting at Winston-Salem State University, school officials said. The shooting happened at about 1:20 a.m. Sunday in the area of Lot W, near Wilson Hall and Gleason-Hairston Terrace. School officials placed the campus on lockdown from 1:30 to 4:50 a.m."Something just didn't feel right and we were driving onto campus and I saw the alarms and I had got the text message alert," said one student.
In-person early voting in NC exceeds 2 million

The number of ballots cast so far in North Carolina's early-voting period topped 2 million on Thursday, according to the state Board of Elections. At a 9 p.m. count, 34 percent of registered voters, or 2,087,461 people, had voted in person. Another 165,847 votes were cast by absentee ballot. Early-voting numbers have far outpaced the same numbers from 2008. Four years ago, more than 2.4 million people voted early in person and 2.6 million when all non-Election Day voting was counted – both records.
Hope Mills couple accused of forcing prostitution

Jacksonville police have charged a Hope Mills couple who they say kidnapped a woman and forced her to work as a prostitute. Robin Applewhite, 36, and Samantha Rivard, 29, both of 3668 Applegate Road, were arrested Sunday after Jacksonville police responding to a complaint of possible prostitution at Baymont Inn & Suites found a woman who said she was forced to travel from Cumberland County to Jacksonville and was being held in sexual servitude.
