Spring football practice has come and gone, and the second departure-and-acquisition period of the offseason has arrived. The transfer portal reopens for 10 days beginning on Wednesday for undergraduate players, and Virginia is expected to be busy in adding to its roster. UVa signed 19 transfers during the winter, and fourth-year coach Tony Elliott has said the Cavaliers still have significant needs in the secondary to address during the spring portal period.

Matthew Buchanan is fully aware of the rarity he’s become. Virginia’s 6-foot, 195-pound left-handed senior reliever needed to wait nearly his whole career for the role he’s in now. “I’ve always been someone who is pretty loyal,” Buchanan said. “So, transferring, I never gave it much thought because I knew I wanted to be at UVa with the school and the coaches. I’ve always loved it. “There’s been some down times when you’re not getting your chances,” he said.

#UVa coach Tony Elliott said Louisville transfer OT Monroe Mills is out for the season with an ACL injury. Elliott said the Cavaliers are still evaluating CB Jam Jackson, who suffered a knee injury during a scrimmage situation.
