    Area Catholics lauded the selection of Pope Leo XIV, not just because he’s American born, but because they’re confident he’ll be a “bridge builder,” dedicated to serving the poor and marginalized. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, originally from the Chicago area but serving the church for decades in South America, was announced Thursday as the 267th pope, taking the name Leo XIV. He was elected cardinal by the late Pope Francis less than two years ago.

    When Jim Emmerling found out the Pittsburgh Pirates fired manager Derek Shelton on Thursday, he was elated. “I’ve been asking for this,” he said. “The last six years have been the worst baseball I can remember.”Shelton was replaced by bench coach Don Kelly as the team languishes in last place in the NL Central. Emmerling, 62, of Steubenville, Ohio, grew up in New Kensington and attended Valley High School.

    Six Democratic candidates for Riverview School Board are vying for four open spots on the November ballot in the May 20 primary. The candidates include incumbents Bridget Seery and Wendy Wilton and newcomers Chistopher Conard, Adeshewa Metzger, Nick Paradise and Michael Smales. Paradise and Wilton are cross-filed on the primary ballot, while Conard, Metzger, Seery and Smales are running only as Democrats. The term of office is four years.

    The May 20 primary ballot will feature some familiar faces vying for four open seats on the Leechburg Area School Board. Incumbents Darius Lovelace, 73; Candi Stewart, 68; Ashley Coudriet, 45; and Jimmy Feudale, 65, are seeking to keep their seats. They are being challenged by Neill Brady, 76, and Danielle Reinke, 44, who are looking to return to office after previous stints; and newcomer Janie Borsh-Symons, 65.

    Some high schoolers will have to wait a bit longer to don their tuxes and gowns. Due to intermittent power outages after Tuesday’s storms, Freeport Area and Highlands school districts changed their planned prom schedules. Both dances were scheduled for this weekend at the Syria Shriner’s Center in Harmar. According to the center’s events coordinator Paulette Zanotti, power has been in and out at the facility and it’s caused a monetary loss for the organization.
