Commuters may have to alter their usual routes through Penn Hills this weekend. PennDOT announced the closure of Rodi Road, also known as Route 791, starting Friday night through Monday morning, June 27-30. Milling and paving operations will take place during that time, weather permitting, between Maple Lane and Business Route 22 (William Penn Highway).

Cathy Favo wants her students to be equipped to explore any job they might want to pursue when they get older. In her sixth grade STEAM classes at Riverview School District, Favo teaches her students about topics such as coding, engineering and design. “(The class) is meant to give the kids opportunities and skills that they’ll need in a workplace that is just so rapidly changing,” Favo said.

Hospitals throughout Western Pennsylvania are seeing a spike in patients with heat-related emergencies, officials said Monday as extreme heat blanketed the region. At UPMC, the region’s largest hospital network, the number of people with heat-affected illnesses has gone up “dramatically,” said Dr. Donald Yealy, chief medical officer. “Absolutely, there’s zero doubt,” he said. The scorching sun isn’t letting up anytime soon.

Penn Hills officials have released resources for residents during this week’s extreme heat warning in Allegheny County. “Extreme heat often results in the highest annual number of deaths among all weather-related disasters,” said a release from the township. The Penn Hills Library on Stotler Road is open Monday until 8 p.m. as a cooling center. The Municipal Government Center and the Senior Services Center are also open as cooling centers.

Members of the West Leechburg Volunteer Fire Company are gearing up for the annual Fireman’s Festival. A revived tradition, the festival will be returning for its fourth year, said Morgan Swank, a member of the department’s fundraising committee. “It continues to grow every year and everyone couldn’t be happier,” Swank said. Swank said there will be a variety of activities, including a petting zoo, bounce house, car show, silent auction, a 50/50 raffle and a variety of vendors.
