    I read Molly Smith Metzler’s award-winning play “Cry It Out” on my phone, in the middle of the night, while nursing my second baby. I couldn’t put the script down. Metzler’s play deftly explores what anthropologists call matrescence — “the becoming of a mother.” Her script questions what is “normal” in the postpartum period, what may relate to disease, and what is a result of societal pressures and class differences. The play deeply resonated with me.
