The Columbus Parks and Recreation Department’s Movies in the Park series returns on May 17 with a blockbuster of an opening movie. Sponsored by the Columbus Park Foundation, the Movies in the Park series gives moviegoers of all ages a chance to see popular movies for free in Mill Race Park, Recreation Program Manager Jacob Hendricks said. This year’s series will begin with “Wicked” on Saturday, with the movie beginning at night fall, he said.

HOPE — Hope’s town square will soon be filled with the savory smells of grill smoke and barbecue as the annual Smoke on the Square returns for its 14th year. Hosted by the Community Center of Hope, competitors will have to bring out their best barbecuing skills in the hopes of taking home a trophy and bragging rights.

Multiple cultures of Asia will come together Saturday in downtown Columbus for the first ever Columbus Asian Fest. This event will feature over 25 food vendor booths representing the cuisine of cultures including Chinese, Indian, Nepali, Filipino and Indonesian, according to Columbus Asian Fest Director of Marketing and Marketing Coordinator Rajesh Thyagarajan. An Asian marketplace-type area with booths will be set up for vendors to sell locally-made items representing their culture, he said.

The Mill Race Theatre Company will host an audition workshop on May 17 for its upcoming production of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” All ages are invited to participate. Production manager Allison Kunkler said the audition will help participants prepare before formal auditions are held on May 31 and June 1.

Whether you walk, run or roll, whether you’re young or old, all are invited to participate in the first ever “I Am Me Jamboree.” Created and organized by Laura Raiman, this charity event aims to be an inclusive 0.5K or 5K event for anyone regardless of age or ability. The event will have both a 0.5K course and a 5K course available for people to participate in, and attendees can participate with or without assistive devices such as canes, wheelchairs, walkers and scooters.
