The South Korean government has decided to increase policy funding for the automotive industry to 15 trillion won ($10.4 billion), in response to U.S. tariffs. The move comes after the United States under President Donald Trump began imposing a 25 percent tariff on all vehicles produced outside the U.S. as of April 3 and plans to extend the same 25 percent tariff to auto parts starting on May 3.

A Hyundai Steel Co. rebar factory in Incheon fell silent on Tuesday as operations ground to a halt for the first time since its founding. The sprawling facility, devoid of workers, remained under tight security with only union songs calling for unity echoing through the empty site. Over 400 rebar production workers were placed on forced leave that day under an agreement to receive 70 percent of their wages while operations remain suspended.

South Korea’s tire manufacturer Kumho Tire Co. will expand the supply of original equipment (OE) tires to brands under the Volkswagen Group. In a statement released on Monday, Kumho Tire announced that it will provide tires for new vehicles of Volkswagen Tiguan and Cupra Terramar. Volkswagen has headquarters each in Germany and Cupra, Spain. The Tiguan and Terramar models are mid-size-SUVs based on Volkswagen’s MQB platform.

South Korea’s automaker Kia Corp showcased its new electric vehicles for the first time in Europe, focusing on affordability and performance to compete as Chinese EVs gain popularity in the region. At Kia EV Day at the Tarraco Arena, Spain, the automaker unveiled three new models: the Kia EV4, the Kia PV5, and the EV2 Concept. The EV4, a mid-size electric sedan designed specifically for the European market, will also be available in a hatchback format.

Hyundai Rotem Co., the railway system manufacturing unit of Hyundai Motor Group, is expanding its global presence with a series of contracts signed to manufacture high-speed rail vehicles and automated light rail vehicles. On Thursday, Maeil Business Newspaper visited Hyundai Rotem’s plant in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province, where various trains, including those for export and domestic use, are being manufactured.
