    After more than a decade and a half of planning and fundraising, the city of Forest Lake will break ground on its new memorial. The new memorial, which will sit on the south side of the parking lot roundabout at Lakeside Memorial Park, features a raised circular design with pavers printed with names of veterans, and a sculpture in the center. The effort has spanned more than 15 years for veterans Bob Dettmer and Ron Miller, who both have been on the committee since the concept was floated in 2008.

    A major reconstruction of Highway 97 between Hornsby Street/Eureka Avenue and Forest Road begins this summer, the first of a two-phased construction effort. The $17 million project has focused on safety improvements of the 1.8 miles of roadway by almost eliminating non-protected left-turn opportunities, adding a median between the single lanes, and adding pedestrian facilities.

He published “Unholy Communion,” a murder-mystery that helped him heal from his experience being sexually abused by a Catholic priest, with St. Paul’s Beaver Pond Press that year. But having his book be made into a film was a dream he didn’t know he had, and added another layer of healing. Mostly, it was to push the conversation about sexual abuse, especially as it happens in the church.

    Singer and actress Ann-Margret Olsson was the star of the show during Forest Lake’s annual Vietnam Veterans Day ceremony on Sunday, March 30 at the Forest Lake American Legion. The 83-year old singer and actress, best known for her roles in “Bye Bye Birdie,” “Viva Las Vegas,” and “Grumpy Old Men,” was also a supporter of the Vietnam troops as they fought in the war. She would tour with the USO twice to Vietnam, first in 1966 and then once more alongside Bob Hope for his Christmas tour in 1968.

    Dylan Simmons, a 21 year old man from North Branch, was recently sentenced to nearly 20 years in prison for the killing of 17-year-old Darisha Vath. On July 16, 2023, Simmons drove his car into a crowd of people from the opposing group of a fight at Lakeside Memorial Park. After initially not hitting anyone, he again took aim at the group, where he hit Vath.
