You could say 2023 was the year of the troll, at least in the Pacific Northwest. Why? Well, this year, Danish environmental artist Thomas Dambo brought his creativity to the Northwest with six massive wooden sculptures that have captivated adults and children alike. Five of the sculptures, all different types of trolls made from recycled materials, are standing in western Washington and a sixth is in Portland.

SEATTLE — Tokitae, the last southern resident orca living in captivity, died in 2023, just as there were plans to try bringing her home to Washington state. The 5,000 pound animal was held captive for more than a half-century, confined to a tank 80 feet by 35 feet and 20 feet deep. She spent decades performing at the Miami Seaquarium until 2022, when it was announced they would no longer feature her under an agreement with regulators.

NEWPORT, Wash. — A search is underway in eastern Washington for a 64-year-old Tibetan monk who was reported missing earlier this month. Namgyal is a resident and instructor at the Sravasti Abbey, a Tibetan Buddhist monastery for western nuns and monks. Namgyal was in his cabin on the property and had told another monk he planned to take a walk when the rain cleared up, according to Thubten Chonyi, who is senior buddhist nun at the Sravasti Abbey monastery.

SEATTLE (KOMO) — Family members of a University of Washington graduate student are sharing his heroic final moments before he was killed by Hamas terrorists inside an Israel residence. Dr. Hayim Katsman, 32, was found murdered in an apartment over the weekend after Hamas terrorists stormed into Israel in a surprise attack on Oct. 7. His uncle, Abe Katsman, said while information has been fluid, they are just now learning what happened in Hayim's final seconds.
