The Columbian
The Columbian is a daily newspaper serving Vancouver, Washington, and Clark County in the United States. It was first published on October 10, 1890, by printer Tom Carolan. For its initial ten years, from 1890 to 1900, it was a four-page daily paper created to provide an alternative perspective to the local Republican newspaper, The Independent.

Clark County motorists will pay more at the pump now that Gov. Bob Ferguson signed into law a 6 cent-per-gallon gas tax increase Tuesday afternoon. Lawmakers passed the transportation budget and accompanying gas tax in the waning days of the legislative session, which ended April 27. The increase is set to begin July 1 amid the usual seasonal rise in fuel prices.

Clayton Lukens focused on the beat and kept smiling. “I faked it till I made it,” he said of his dance audition for the Broadway Across America touring production of “The Book of Mormon,” which will come to Portland’s Keller Auditorium next week. Actually, Lukens did a lot more than fake it. The Camas native had worked with a friend in a practice room for days, drilling the dance he’d need to deliver with professional polish and gusto. “Dance has never been my thing,” Lukens said.

We finally get a break from the cloudy and somewhat damp weather as the storm track inches away from us. Today, we’ll still have scattered clouds, with clearing late in the evening. The long Memorial Day weekend will abound with sunshine and warmer temperatures elevating into the 80s on Sunday. That’s the plan, anyway. It is possible we’ll see occasional cloudiness moving by over the holiday, as we are still close to the weather action to our north.

The Plas Newydd Farm Arts Initiative will host the Creating Space Fine Art Show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at 33415 N.W. Lancaster Road, Ridgefield. The show features north Clark County artists as well as Plas Newydd Farm artists-in-residence. Their work includes painting, collage, clay, textiles and bronze sculpture. Live music will be provided by fingerstyle guitarist Kit Garoutte.

Will Foster of Prairie, Daphne Evenson of Skyview, Leilani Mays of Union, Cohen Butler and Karina Cooper of Camas and Jordyn Robarge and Eleanor Treadway of Kelso captured bi-district titles on the first day Wednesday of the 4A/3A West Central/Southwest Bi-District track and field meet at French Field in Kent. Foster easily won the 3A boys discus with a mark of 180 feet, 4 inches, outdistancing his next closest competitor by almost 12 feet.
