USF says a plan to increase on-campus housing rates resulted in a rise in demand by allowing the university to invest in its housing facilities. But with more people applying to live on campus than usual, some students were left without a place to live the next school year. Alexis Edminster, a junior studio art major, was unable to secure a dorm on campus and is moving back to her hometown in Chicago.

Faculty Senate Vice President Scott Perry said he can’t “get a hold of” USF President Rhea Law to learn her stance on the rumored Sarasota-Manatee and New College of Florida merger. “I’ve always found Rhea Law to make the right statement at the right time, but she’s not being available to talk,” Perry said. “I’m not sure that anybody can really find out what she’s thinking.”Perry said he has a “gorgeous” relationship with Law and has tried to reach her — but heard nothing back.

But now the pair are going on a different journey – the race for the offices of student body president and vice president. Joseph Alexander said he had a “very good life” with his family until Nazi Germany’s invasion of Poland in 1939. He was only 17 years old the first time he was in a concentration camp. Alexander survived 12 camps, including Auschwitz and Dachau, and is the only survivor of his immediate family, which included his parents, three sisters and two brothers. He shared his story with students at an event organized by Chabad at USF last Thursday.

University President Rhea Law, 75, announced on Monday she is stepping down from her role after her replacement has been chosen. There is no clear timeline for when Law’s successor will be selected. Law said she was leaving now because “the foundation is in place for a new leader to take us to even greater heights.” Law’s contract with the university was set to end this March.

USF “recently” added Narcan, an emergency medication that reverses an opioid overdose, to its residence halls, complying with a year-old regulation. Narcan is formally known as Naloxone. The nasal spray form of the drug is now available in clear boxes in campus dorm buildings. The addition to USF dorms comes in the middle of an opioid overdose epidemic. Over 80,000 people died from an overdose between September 2023 and September 2024, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

When choosing between attending classes or going on a humanitarian aid trip to the Dominican Republic, the choice for William Carmichael was easy. Carmichael is the president of Project World Health (PWH), a student organization that goes on humanitarian trips to provide medical care for underserved communities around the world. This year’s trip to the Dominican Republic is set for March 1, just over two weeks from USF’s spring break, meaning the group will have to skip classes to participate.
