David Allsopp said he knew the Florida State Department of Governmental Efficiency was looking for “inefficiencies” across higher education institutions ever since its creation in February. However, as a professor who has conducted research at USF for 24 years, Allsopp was “surprised” to learn the Florida DOGE team would analyze research done by university staff. “I don’t know what they think they’re going to find,” said Allsopp, a professor in the College of Education.

The beginning of a new generation of USF student leaders started on May 12, when the USF Student Government hosted a ceremony to inaugurate its sixth consolidated term. Among the new officers are Sumit Jadhav and Caio Esmeraldi, who will serve as student body president and vice president, respectively, representing all three USF campuses. Emma Goodwin and Ethan Walsh will serve as USF Tampa’s governor and lieutenant governor, respectively. The USF St. Pete campus will be served by Gov.

USF has assembled a task force to promote “efficiency, transparency and strategic reinvestment” among university departments and staff. The team will be responsible for managing Florida State Department of Governmental Efficiency requests at USF, according to public records obtained by The Oracle. Gov. Ron DeSantis the Florida DOGE in February to “identify and eliminate unnecessary spending, programs, courses, staff and any other inefficiencies” in state universities.

Faculty Senate Vice President Scott Perry said he can’t “get a hold of” USF President Rhea Law to learn her stance on the rumored Sarasota-Manatee and New College of Florida merger. “I’ve always found Rhea Law to make the right statement at the right time, but she’s not being available to talk,” Perry said. “I’m not sure that anybody can really find out what she’s thinking.”Perry said he has a “gorgeous” relationship with Law and has tried to reach her — but heard nothing back.
