When I was a kid, there were three Chinese restaurants on the same block of Main Street in Woodland, the small Yolo County town where I grew up: Fong's, Hong Kong Cafe and the Chicago Cafe. Back then, I found it odd that the Chinese food we ate at home was nothing like what these restaurants served, things like chop suey, egg foo young and sweet and sour pork.

Many would consider how my immediate family came to America in 1966 the right way because they “waited their turn” in the immigration line. My grandfather, Henry Kum Lim, sponsored my parents and siblings to come to the United States.

When I ride my bike to Ocean Beach on a weekday, I sometimes forget that the Upper Great Highway is open to cars. I’d gotten used to the road’s closure to cars at the onset of the pandemic. I’m disappointed after pedaling the 10 blocks from my house and then being relegated to a bumpy ride weaving through people on the rocky asphalt of the shared walking and bike path or having to brave the traffic on the shoulder of the highway.

An old amusement park game in San Francisco’s Japantown is helping accomplish what the mayor and other city leaders can’t seem to make happen downtown — bringing shoppers back. The claw machine, which tantalizes players with seemingly easy-to-grab prizes, originated in the U.S. and became a craze in Asia and Japan that’s been exported back to America. Japan-based Kiddleton has opened two locations of its claw machine arcades in Japantown — and they’re a hit.
