As a 327-foot decision looms over downtown Sarasota, residents are coordinating a last-minute push to persuade city leaders to strike it down. On April 21, the Sarasota City Commission is set to vote on a citizen appeal of The Obsidian, a 14-unit condominium project that, as proposed, would stand as the tallest building in downtown at 18 stories. Opponents of the project are fast-tracking final efforts to banish it.

Another nonstop flight is now available at the Sarasota Bradenton International Airport. Allegiant Airlines launched a new route from SRQ to the Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, Kentucky, beginning today. The flight marks Allegiant’s 35th route from SRQ and the airport’s 60th nonstop destination. The route will fly Sundays and Thursdays, and one-way fares start at $45 if purchased by April 5.

Long-planned changes to one of Sarasota’s marquee attractions are underway and on schedule, according to the group responsible for seeing them through. Sarasota’s Bay Park Improvement Board heard updates from the Bay Park Conservancy on the continuing redevelopment of The Bay, Sarasota’s signature downtown park along Sarasota Bay, at a March 25 meeting. The park is currently in phase two of a master plan that seeks to revitalize all 53 acres of the property once it’s completed.

A new office will manage more than $1.75 million in federal funding aimed at bolstering housing and community development efforts, Sarasota County announced Wednesday. Sarasota County announced the installation of its Housing Enhancement and Redevelopment Office (HERO) to distribute funds from the Community Development Block Grant and the Emergency Solutions Grant, two federal grants allocated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
