US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order intended to eliminate seven federal agencies, including the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, which is part of the Smithsonian Institution. The order, which was signed on Friday (14 March), states that the president has determined a total of seven agencies to be “unnecessary”, and that each will “be eliminated to the maximum extent consistent with applicable law”.

The US General Services Administration (GSA) under President Donald Trump briefly published then removed a list of federal buildings it seeks to offload, including several properties of cultural interest. The “non-core property list”, published 4 March, initially included 443 properties but was revised to 320 after backlash over the inclusion of properties like the J. Edgar Hoover FBI Headquarters in Washington, DC.
