RACINE — The Racine YMCA’s Riverside Branch will close May 30 after almost six years of operation. Racine YMCA CEO Tamarra Coleman said the organization’s board of directors made the “difficult decision” to close the location, at 141 Main St., in March. Low membership was one of the reasons for the decision, Coleman said. The branch, which opened in July 2019, hadn’t seen an increase in membership in five years.

CITY OF BURLINGTON — City of Burlington Fire Department Chief Alan Babe retired April 30 after 30 years in the fire service. Babe served nine years with the CBFD and 21 years with the Raymond Fire and Rescue Department, according to Burlington City Administrator Carina Walters. RACINE — Ronald Richard Stiff, known locally as 1400 AM WRJN radio’s “Ron Richards,” died May 3 at age 77. He will be remembered locally as a “top-quality air personality” who “put his entire being” into the WRJN radio station, according to former colleague Don Rosen of WRJN. Richards passed away from complications of an emergency bypass heart surgery after being flown to Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital in Milwaukee.

RACINE — The City of Racine will begin demolition of the former Racine Family YMCA building at 725 Lake Ave. on Monday, with a sledgehammer ceremony scheduled for noon to kick off the work. New Berlin Grading will carry out the work, with active demolition expected to continue for several weeks. Site grading and clean-up will follow, according to the city.
