County receives federal grant for roundabout project

YORKVILLE - Racine County has received a $563,493 federal grant to design a roundabout at the intersection of County Trunk Highways K (Northwestern Avenue) and V. The Racine County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved the acceptance of the Highway Safety Improvement Program grant, as well as a design contract with civil engineering firm raSmith, the creation of a new capital project for the Highway K and V intersection, and the transfer of $70,000 within the Capital 2025 Budget.
Main Street to close for construction April 21 through June 21

RACINE — Starting Monday, April 21, Main Street will close to vehicle and pedestrian traffic between Goold and Augusta streets for road reconstruction. The closure is expected to last until June 21. Melvin Avenue, Erie Street and Goold Street can be used as detours, the city said, and the Goold Street and Melvin Avenue intersections will remain open. A second phase of the project is scheduled to begin July 7 and is expected to be completed by the end of October.
Mount Pleasant removes 'leveling' from land fill ordinance

MOUNT PLEASANT — The Mount Pleasant Village Board on Monday approved an ordinance amendment related to filling land in the village. The changes were proposed to eliminate use of the word “leveling” and more accurately reflect the intent of a village-issued Fill Permit, according to village documents.

RACINE — Alders were sworn in Tuesday for the Common Council's new session, including four newcomers. Racine City Clerk Tara McMenamin administered the oath to District 1 Alder Malik Frazier, District 3 Alder Olivia Turquoise-Davis, District 5 Alder Jens Jorgensen, District 7 Alder Maurice Horton, District 8 Alder Cinthia Esqueda, District 9 Alder Grace Allen, District 11 Alder Mary Land, District 13 Alder Renee Kelly, District 14 Alder Marlo Harmon and District 15 Alder Nathan Pabon.
UW-Parkside partners with county to improve Youth Care Center

CALEDONIA — Students at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside have helped inform the design of the Jonathan Delagrave Youth Development and Care Center to optimize outcomes for youth in the center. The newly opened YDCC, at 2300 Three Mile Road in Caledonia, is a 48-bed, 70,000-square-foot secure residential care facility.
Two organizations certified for community housing funding

RACINE — The city has certified two organizations, the Racine Revitalization Partnership and Habitat for Humanity, as the Housing Rehabilitation Community Housing Development Organization for the 2025-26 funding cycle. A CHDO is a private nonprofit, community-based organization with the capacity to develop affordable housing for the community it serves, city documents say.
Gary Beck retires after 50 years of service to Rochester

ROCHESTER — Today marks the end of an era. Gary Beck is stepping down from the Rochester Village Board after 50 years of service to the community. Beck was elected to the Town of Rochester Board in 1975, prior to the Town and Village of Rochester’s consolidation. He became town chairman in 1995. After Rochester residents voted to consolidate the town and village into one Village of Rochester, Beck was elected as a trustee to the Rochester Village Board in 2009.
Racine County authorizes Horlick Dam project partnership

YORKVILLE — The Racine County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday authorized a partnership agreement with the U.S. Department of the Army for the Horlick Dam restoration project and the use of $400,000 for design costs. The Department of the Army requires the county to enter into and execute the project partnership agreement before the project can proceed into the design phase, according to county documents.
Caledonia approves Thomas Farms Subdivision preliminary plat

CALEDONIA — The Caledonia Village Board on Tuesday approved the preliminary plat for the proposed Thomas Farms Subdivision. Trustees voted 5-2 in favor, with Fran Martin and Nancy Pierce dissenting. Martin said she was against the preliminary plat for the same reasons she's voted against past resolutions regarding the Thomas Farms Subdivision plan, including a lack of green space and spaces for children to play.
