Cameron Marks, a director of Percy Marks – a jewellery store established in Sydney in 1899 – has resigned. Marks joined the JAA’s board in May 2017 and until his resignation, was the longest continually serving director. A brief stint with the JAA has also ended for Meredith Doig, who joined the board in September 2022. Her appointment was not without controversy. Doig promotes herself as a board governance expert and her JAA profile page listed her as a 'Professional Company Director & Consultant'.

Jeweller recently became aware of a disagreement involving an ‘overpayment’ between the JAA and a jewellery store owner, who has been a member since 2005. Put simply, a baffling bureaucratic stance, a confusing membership structure, and a lack of clarity regarding fees and refunds have resulted in the JAA effectively sacrificing a 20-year membership during a disagreement over $388.

He said that negative marketing strategies harmed the confidence consumers have in the overall industry. “The items we sell do not necessarily have inherent value – such is the nature of luxury products,” he explained.

Significant changes were made to the Diamond Dealers Club of Australia (DDCA) earlier this year, including the shuffling of the president and vice president positions. The club also unveiled a revamped website that removed various contentious and unsupported claims. In September, Jeweller reported that a ‘position swap’ had occurred - former vice president Craig Miller assumed the presidency, while former president Rami Baron moved to the vice president's position.

The ACCC completed a sweep across seven sectors and found that 81 per cent of influencers were responsible for misleading advertising. The most common issue was a failure to disclose commercial relationships, which included sharing posts by brands, prominently featuring products in their posts, and not consistently using advertising disclosure tools.

Recently I have found myself wondering if our industry will ever learn from the past. A second Sydney jewellery fair has been announced and once again I find myself asking, how does it benefit the wider industry? This is now the fourth attempt and on every previous occasion it caused nothing but division. There are many factors at play; however, I place much of the blame on the industry’s lack of an influential trade association.

Asscher is currently serving his second term as president of the WDC and was once the owner and operator of the Royal Asscher Diamond Company. Established in 2003, the KPCS is a coalition of 85 members from governments and industry stakeholders with stated the aim of preventing diamonds of unethical origin – namely those sold for the purposes of financing conflict – from reaching retail markets.
