After a brief cooling period across Southern California, an “anomalous” heat wave is set to continue this week, carrying triple-digit temperatures for cities mostly in the Inland Empire. Temperatures around the Inland Empire had already climbed into the low 100s on Wednesday, with an excessive heat warning in effect for much of the area through Monday evening.

In a major move for older motorists, those who are 70 years old and older will no longer be required to take a knowledge test to renew their licenses, the California Department of Motor Vehicles announced on Monday, Sept. 30. All drivers had been required to take the knowledge test once their license expired after turning 70, which had been a policy but not a law, DMV Director Steve Gordon said in a press release.

A guitarist who has played with Pearl Jam and the Red Hot Chili Peppers and was involved in fatal collision in Alhambra in March pleaded not guilty Thursday to a vehicular manslaughter charge. On March 18, the victim, Israel Sanchez, was heading to the grocery store and walking in a protected crosswalk at Main Street and Meridian Avenue when he was struck by an SUV driven by Josh Klinghoffer, officials said.

A person and a horse died after a car collided with the animal on the 15 freeway in Norco on Sunday, authorities said. Around 2 a.m., a sedan was traveling along the freeway, near Sixth Street, when the driver collided with the horse, according to the Cal Fire Riverside County Fire Department. One victim and the horse were pronounced dead at the scene. Another person who was in the car was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
