More than half a million people attended the 2025 Surrey Khalsa Day Vaisakhi Parade on Saturday, making it once again the largest annual celebration of the Sikh holiday in the world. Nearly two dozen floats processed along 128 Street from Gurdwara Dashmesh Darbar, drawing a crowd of more than 550,000 along the parade route. “What we witnessed today was a beautiful expression of unity, diversity, and shared joy,” said parade spokesperson Moninder Singh, in a statement.

Homicide investigators have been deployed to the City of Langley after a suspicious fire Friday. The blaze broke out in the 20500 block of 56 Avenue Friday morning, and officers remained at the scene early Saturday afternoon, more than 24 hours later. Sgt. Freda Fong, spokesperson for the Lower Mainland’s Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, told CTV News the team deployed to the scene Friday afternoon, after a body was located inside the burned building.

Police are investigating after a Sikh temple in South Vancouver was vandalized overnight. Images shared with CTV News show the word “Khalistan” spray-painted in multiple places on the wall that surrounds the parking lot of the Khalsa Diwan Society gurdwara. Khalistan is the name used to refer to the part of Punjab in India and Pakistan that separatists would like to establish as an independent Sikh nation.

Officials at a medium-security federal prison in B.C.’s Fraser Valley say they have seized contraband items worth nearly $125,000 to the facility’s inmates. The items were found in two packages “on the perimeter” of Mountain Institution in Agassiz on April 12 and 13, the Correctional Service of Canada said in a statement Wednesday.
