EDITORIALHe aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata, he tangata, he tangata. Most people know the above Māori proverb, and its translation. “What is the most important thing in the world? It is the people, it is the people, it is the people.”I’ve always liked that proverb, and it has always rung true for me, but the proverb has become even more meaningful for me over the past month or so.

The inaugural editor of the Mountain Town News was Keith Anderson, but the idea of a paper for the town came some years previously. Back when Anderson was a printing trade apprentice at the Broadway Printing Office, his boss received a visit from the local Rotary Club. Anderson overheard some of the delegates discussing the possibility of starting up a local paper and Anderson filed it away.

Timing was tight, he said, as councils were meeting for the final time in the year, and submissions on the bill closed on January 7. Councillor Ellen Hall asked what message not making a submission might send to iwi. The current perception, Moeahu said, was “they are building and strengthening relationships with councils all over Taranaki despite the friction at times, but it’s heartwarming because the legacy never used to be that way”.

Consistently interacting with a live audience – where you never quite know what response you will get – takes equal amounts of skill and energy, and these three actors have both in droves. They didn’t miss a beat, in the pre-show part of when on stage in the show itself, and were deservedly an audience favourite. Consistently breaking the fourth wall, and again relying on audience response to fuel his actions, was Edward Lear, played by the talented Alfie Healion.
