Living Rare, the first large-scale study of its kind in the U.S., seeks to capture the changing unmet needs and challenges faced by rare disease patients over time, according to the nonprofit.

People with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at significantly higher risk for various forms of spondyloarthritis (SpA), including ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a study found. But the reverse wasn’t true: Having SpA was not linked to an increased risk of developing IBD, according to the new analysis, which used genetic data. The researchers had aimed to identify relationships between the two conditions, which often co-exist among patients.

A research project to help shed light about why people with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are at higher risk for developing pulmonary hypertension (PH) was awarded a $2.67 million grant. The four-year grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health, was given to Sharilyn Almodóvar, PhD, at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) School of Medicine.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has lifted a clinical hold on a Phase 2 trial testing INmune Bio’s investigational treatment XPro1595 in people with Alzheimer’s disease. Regulators issued the hold in 2022 pending additional manufacturing information from INmune. The company addressed some of the FDA’s concerns, but the regulator maintained its hold, seeking more data on the therapy’s long-term potency.

The antimalarial agent hydroxychloroquine doesn’t appear to lower the risk of preeclampsia during pregnancy in women with lupus, a study reports. The study, “Hydroxychloroquine in lupus pregnancy and risk of preeclampsia,” was published in Arthritis & Rheumatology. Preeclampsia is a pregnancy complication marked by high blood pressure and signs of organ damage, such as high protein levels in the urine.

Among people with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), those who develop pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), or high blood pressure in the vessels that supply the lungs, appear to be younger at diagnosis and have more severe disease, a study in Japan has found. In SLE patients with PAH, immune-suppressing glucocorticoids are the treatment of choice, followed by vasodilators, or therapies that widen blood vessels to lower blood pressure.
