A despairing dad has vowed to pull his daughter out of Hazlehead Academy as he claims a knife incident at the Aberdeen school today is just the latest act in a spree of violence – with “girls attacked every day”. The father, who has been left fearful for his child’s safety, says pupils are “battered” on a daily basis. He was speaking to The Press and Journal on Groats Road just hours after it’s understood an incident involving a knife left one pupil needing hospital treatment.

Costco have been given the green light to build a petrol station next to the Westhill store. The retail giant’s plans have been approved by Aberdeenshire Council – meaning it will be their first fuelling station in the north-east, with the nearest one now in Edinburgh. The site will have 12 petrol pumps, alongside a host of electric vehicle charging points. Fears had been raised over traffic concerns at the already-busy Kingshill Commercial Park.

Wetherspoon bosses have pledged to clean up the grubby goddess statue atop the Archibald Simpson pub as they vow to see through some major expansion plans. It has gazed down from the roof of the A-listed former bank for more than 180 years, but is in a sorry state having been left exposed to the elements. The grimy sculpture depicts the Roman deity Ceres, who is the goddess of agriculture, grain crops, fertility and motherly relationships.

The nationwide charity was set up to help members of the Armed Forces and their families more than a century ago. But as times change, many are facing an increasing struggle to survive – while it’s a battle some have already lost amid plummeting memberships and rocketing costs. Oldmeldrum wasn’t going to lose its Legion without a fight, however.

When my boss told me I was to be one of the first people to experience the new Aberdeen open-top bus, I did the first thing most Aberdonians would – and checked the weather. Though clouds did darken the sky once or twice, and it was a bit blustery by the coast, the threatened downpour didn’t arrive. This new tour bus, backed by various business bodies, is launching in a bid to cash in on the scores of cruise ships set to arrive in the north-east over the summer.
