A MAN WHO anally raped a woman on their first date, despite her telling him repeatedly he did not have her legal consent to do so, has been jailed for five years and three months. 37-year-old Gary Coffey, formerly of Leinster Road West, Dublin, was found guilty by a jury of one count of anal rape and one count of sexually assaulting the woman at his home address in January 2023 following a Central Criminal Court trial in March this year.

A man who subjected two of his younger sisters to “horrific” and repeated sexual abuse in the 1970s has been jailed for four and a half years. Bernard Brennan, aged 67, formerly of Rathfarnham, Dublin, but most recently residing in the United States, pleaded guilty to 11 counts of indecent assault at various locations within the State between 1972 and 1975. He has no previous convictions. His sisters, Yvonne Crist and Paula Fay, waived their anonymity so Brennan could be named.

A judge has warned that a car can become a “maiming or killing machine if not driven with due regard for all road users, especially pedestrians”. Judge Pauline Codd made the comments while imposing a 17-month suspended prison sentence on a driver who broke a red light and knocked down an elderly lady as she crossed the road, leaving her with serious and life-changing injuries.

It can now be reported: Top criminal solicitor Cahir O'Higgins was jailed this year for the prolonged harassment of a fellow solicitor that culminated in O'Higgins punching the other man's nose. The judge described his behaviour as "thuggish", "deranged". https://t.co/ZqVTNMM0pw
