The Vancouver Art Gallery will be reducing its workforce by at least 30 people, according to the union that represents around 90 gallery employees. Warren Williams, the president of CUPE Local 15, said the union confirmed the gallery’s plans Monday. Williams said he’s both “concerned” and “a bit surprised” by the decision. “I mean, I wasn’t expecting it,” he told CTV News.

An oversight body whose role it is to develop the Vancouver Police Department’s budget, wasn’t part of the approval process for a multi-million dollar initiative aimed at targeting crime on the Downtown Eastside. Frank Chong, the chair of the Vancouver Police Board, said the board learned about the $5 million dollar plan, named ‘Task Force Barrage,’ through Mayor Ken Sim’s press conference with then-chief Adam Palmer in February.

Vancouver taxpayers could be on the hook for a steep property tax hike next year, but the city’s mayor says he’s determined to prevent that – putting the onus on staff to find solutions to keep taxes low. On Wednesday, Mayor Ken Sim tabled a successful motion that asked staff to prepare a budget for 2026 based on three scenarios: A 2.5-per-cent property tax increase, a 1.5-per-cent property tax increase, and a zero-per-cent property tax increase.
