MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine government has identified 120,000 minimum wage earners nationwide who will be beneficiaries of the P20/kilo rice program starting June. The initial list came from the Department of Labor and Employment, according to Department of Agriculture (DA) spokesman Arnel de Mesa. Selected minimum wage earners will be allowed to buy a maximum of 10 kilos per month. How the rice will reach the minimum wage earners remains a question.

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Agriculture (DA) is set to recommend keeping lower tariffs on imported rice until the next harvest season, according to agriculture chief Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., to avoid jacking up prices significantly during lean months. “I will not increase for now because the harvest season here and in origin [countries] — those selling — is over,” Laurel told reporters in a mix of Filipino and English on Monday, May 26.

MANILA, Philippines – The Supreme Court (SC) declared void the ordinances and resolutions imposing a 25-year moratorium on large-scale mining in Occidental Mindoro. The 31-page decision promulgated January 14 but only released May 14, affirmed the 2018 decision of the Regional Trial Court of Mamburao, Occidental Mindoro, nullifying the mining ban.
