    MANILA, Philippines – The Senate has to convene as an impeachment court before it can dismiss the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte, incoming lawmaker and former justice secretary Leila de Lima said on Wednesday, June 4. “Only the Senate constituted as an Impeachment Court can decide matters of impeachment. The Senate acting regularly as a house of Congress has no power to dismiss, or declared dismiss an impeachment case,” De Lima explained to Rappler.

    The fall of Arnolfo “Arnie” Teves Jr. in the hands of authorities was over two years in the making. After a cycle of arrests and releases from detention, the former lawmaker, who faces multiple criminal cases in the Philippines, was arrested a final time in Timor-Leste on May 27. His counsel, Ferdinand Topacio, said Teves was nabbed by the immigration police at around 8 pm. Philippine authorities did not confirm nor deny the arrest.
