Lacking building wide air conditioning in several dorms around campus, some PSU students face prolonged heat exposure. Experts say this can lead to physical harm—even in young and healthy individuals. This year, an update to PSU’s Housing and Residence Life (UHRL) policies was aimed to fix that. In June, several students gathered in the lounge at the bottom of Montgomery Hall to discuss an approaching heat wave.

Students and campus community members may have noticed a big change in the Park Blocks. The fence around the library—erected after its occupation last spring—has come down. In March, individuals protesting the war in Gaza entered and occupied the library before being forced out by Portland police. There was damage throughout the building, including broken equipment, shattered windows, spray paint on walls and books, and additional damage to the fire safety system.

The Faculty of Portland State’s Intensive English Language Program (IELP) received an email on Feb. 12 asking them to attend an emergency Zoom meeting. During this meeting, Interim Provost Shelly Chabon informed them that all 12 of IELP’s faculty members would be laid off and the program would be cut at the end of the academic year due to declining enrollment.

Following a large protest on campus at around 7 p.m. on Monday, April 29, individuals entered and barricaded themselves inside Portland State’s Millar Library. The protesters allege that a window was accidentally broken by a camera and—fearing a police response—they entered and barricaded themselves inside. This narrative has not been confirmed. According to KOIN News, as many as 75 protesters entered the building.
