Experts say this can lead to physical harm—even in young and healthy individuals. This year, an update to PSU’s Housing and Residence Life (UHRL) policies was aimed to fix that. In June, several students gathered in the lounge at the bottom of Montgomery Hall to discuss an approaching heat wave.

Portland State students across the city opened their phones on Oct. 5, 2023, to discover a text message from an unknown phone number offering them a helping hand. “Hey [insert name], this is Victor E. Bot [robot face emoji] on behalf of Portland State University! I’m here to support you.”The text bot, analogously named Victor E. Bot to PSU mascot Victor E. Viking, is PSU’s most recent digital communication tool aiming to connect PSU students to various resources and information they may find useful.

Boycotts have a rich historical significance in fostering collective action and solidarity against the decisions of a company or country. The concept traces back to the 1880s during the Irish land agitation, where people protested against exorbitant rent and evictions. There are too many cars at Portland State. If you’ve ever been to PSU’s campus, chances are you’ve noticed the parking situation. Commuters coming to PSU by car have a few choices. They can park in one of the large campus parking structures or park on the street—that’s if there’s parking available at all. That gets to the heart of the problem—students shouldn’t be driving cars to campus. That’s not to blame the students, of course.

Portland’s public transit system is—relatively speaking—pretty good. Portlanders took just under 43 million rides on TriMet in the 2022 fiscal year, according to TriMet ridership statistics. While Portland’s public transit system doesn’t make the top-10 list in the United States, it’s certainly better than many other cities. However, it could be better.
