Four years ago on a sweltering summer night in Jersey City, Bet Bash was brought into the world. It was born of one man’s vision to have a networking event that would be for bettors, by bettors. That man, of course, is Spanky. Since then the event has grown and we’re now on the verge of Bet Bash 4, Aug. 6-9 once again at the Circa Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. The fourth installment will will attract hundreds of new attendees. Some will be attending their first sports bettors networking event.

The next big thing in sports betting is about to hit us. If you haven’t heard of sweepstakes betting yet, you soon will. It’s poised to massively expand the number of people in the U.S. who can access sports betting. Is it legal? Is it safe? Should you should try it? One of the key moments in my gambling career came on May 14, 2018 when the Supreme Court ruled that states were free to decide if they wanted to regulate sports betting for themselves.

I read David Bahnsen’s Full-Time: Work and the Meaning of Life with no small amount of skepticism: What could a hedge fund manager teach about the theology of work? The answer is: a lot. Spending time with Full-Time is worthwhile; in addition to delivering information, the book prompts readers to reflect on their own lives. Full-Time is also fun: Bahnsen’s willingness to say the awkward thing is absolutely delightful.

Since 2017 the study of American evangelicalism has featured a barrage of books that seemingly prove this religious group’s bad manners and uncivil politics. This perspective circulated even before the 2016 election of Donald Trump, to be sure. But with the election of Trump and the four-year, almost daily reminder of evangelical hypocrisy—headlines regularly repeated that “Eighty-One Percent of White Evangelicals Voted for Donald Trump”—the study of evangelicalism took an abrupt U-turn.

Bump-stock devices, which are firearm accessories that allow semi-automatic rifles to fire more quickly, are a niche possession. They were used in the mass murder in Las Vegas in 2017 at the Route 91 Harvest Festival, and in the wake of that horror, their legality is up for debate. It is easy enough to understand why people with little interest in guns would take a dim view of firearm accessories that have helped to facilitate mass murder.
